Friday Favorites

August 2, 2024

Making a list of happy thoughts is an easy way to find the good in every day.  Finding the good in every day is key to personal happiness.

Today is

And I’m going to share a list of my favorites from this past week.

Favorite # ONE

The Garden Center

at Hagan Ace Hardware

Recently my “cube mate” Michelle told me that whenever she is in a bad mood, she goes to the Ace Hardware on San Jose.  I wasn’t in a bad mood on Saturday, but we were in the area so LB and I decided to check it out.  $65 later we came home with 7 new plants.

It was SO hot Saturday afternoon as we walked around that expansive garden center, but all of that changed when the rain came on Saturday night.

I was pretty disappointed because it was date night and my outfit was cute.  The rain WOULS NOT STOP and the street was flooded.  It was impossible to step up onto the sidewalk from the street without wading through at least 4 inches of water.  We walked all around that block looking for a place to step up, but it was not to be.  My shoes were soaked.  My pants were soaked.  It was not a pretty sight after LB and Iwalked only one block to see

Favorite # TWO

Donny Osmond

 at the Florida Theater

This man is a true entertainer and his show was great!

Later that evening when LB and I got home, my pants and shoes were still wet.  It occurred to me that my shoes may be ruined which was a good excuse to buy a new pair.

Favorite # THREE

New Shoes

Metallic shoes are supposedly trending and I’ve been looking for a style that I like.  I saw some on the Chico’s website, but when I clicked on them, and was redirected to the shoes and accessories, they were not to be found.  So I looked to Amazon for help and sure enough… there they were.

Favorite # FOUR

A Day OFF

And I’m fixin’ to be out of vacation.

LB had a death in the family and needed to drive to GA to attend the funeral.  Needless to say, he wanted me to come along.  Thursday was not available, but the attendance manager helped me add a vacation day because she could see that someone was releasing their vacation day.  That was such a big favor and I just love her.  The only reason I didn’t use her as a favorite is because I didn’t get permission.

I decided my last Friday Favorite would be one that I have used many times.  LB and I ended the day with my favorite quisine… Salsa’s Fajitas

Epcot Adventure

December 2, 2020

At first it was going to be The 25th Annual 2020 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival that Stephanie and Amanda wanted us to attend.  So LB bought tickets to EPCOT for November 13th.

Then it was decided that we should instead attend the Taste of EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays on the Friday after Thanksgiving.  So LB changed our reservations and tickets.

On Friday morning, LB and I headed to Orlando to meet Stephanie and Amanda.

We met at the Pop Century Resort and took the new Skyliner to Epcot.  I am not a Disney park regular, like many in my family, so I left it up to my girls to show us the Disney ropes.  For starters, they suggested that I participate in the

Holiday Cookie Stroll

and then led us to the World Showplace where we enjoyed some Festival Favorites and picked up our first cookie.

Festival Favorites at the World Showplace

Gingerbread Cookie

It was at the world showplace where we began our day of eating tiny servings of International dishes.

It was great.

Our next stop was the Yukon Holiday Kitchen at the Canada Pavilion where we picked up our

Peppermint Pinwheel Cookie

For some reason the girls did not want this cookie and asked for permission to swap it for two of another.  I haven’t tasted it yet, but I think it is kinda cute.

Stop number three was the Bavaria Holiday Kitchen at the Germany Pavilion where we collected our

          Linzer Cookie

Cookie number four was at the American Holiday Table at the America Pavilion

Chocolate Crinkle Cookie

Later that day, after enjoying a few of EPCOT’s attractions, we stopped to purchase our fifth Cookie Stroll cookie at the L’Chaim Holiday Kitchen [between the Morocco and France Pavilions]; the

Black-and-White Cookie

LB doesn’t know it yet, but I’ve already eaten this cookie.  Yep… all by myself.

The L’Chaim Holiday Kitchen was the last cookie stroll stop and was also my favorite dining spot.  There was a tiny pastrami sandwich and potato latkes topped with smoked salmon.

The prize cookie was the

Minnie Peppermint Cookie

at the Holiday Sweets and Treats, where Amanda got her favorite chocolate peppermint shake.TINY chocolate peppermint shake.

To house my expensive collectible cookies, I purchased this cutie collectible containerwith the help of Amanda’s season-ticket-holder-discount.

Our EPCOT Adventure was a fun day and I would definitely recommend the Taste of EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays event.

Apparently I’ve been preoccupied lately because I have been neglecting to publish my usual

On Saturday LB and I HAD to get out of the house.  I saw this as an opportunity to go

SHOPPING

The dressing rooms were open!It was a fun time!

We decided to go to the St. Augustine Outlet and then drive to the historic district to see the annual Nights of Lights.  We made it to the outlet mall, and had a great time, but the streets of St. Augustine were jam packed.  We’ll most likely try to get back to Nights of Lights sometime during the week, but on this trip, we visited an old favorite:

Favorite # THREE

This week I came across an article that had me ‘grinning like a mule eating briars’

Bless Your Heart

… and Other Southern Sayings.

It was written by Chloe Ann and can be found here.

I use ‘Bless Your/Her/His Heart’ often, just to reply to a comment.  And most of the sayings in this article I remember hearing from my grandparents.  Mema used ‘Kindly’ and ‘Hasslin’. Everyone used ‘Fixin’, ‘Lordy Mercy’, ‘Reckon’, ‘Yonder’, and ‘Yall’.  Grandpa would have Dinner and Supper as opposed to Lunch and Dinner.

One that I didn’t read in this article was ‘Shoo’, meaning ‘get away’ which my Papa used when he told a story about his Grandmother.  As he came to the end of the story, using a high pitched voice he would say “Shoooo you chickens”

Jenna Ellis

This lady didn’t miss a beat in the press conference that was held on Thursday.

She stands here in this photo as a member of “an elite strike force team”.

She is my new hero.

I asked a coworker today if she watched the news conference about the election fraud.  She replied, “No, News4Jax said there was no fraud; that Trump needs to just give it up”.

Whether you agree with that or not, you owe it to yourself to hear the truth.

The Lake House Family Reunion

October 19, 2020

Have I told y’all about “The Lake” before?

Growing up I spent a lot of time at the lake house my grandparents owned.

The house is located on property at Lake Hewitt in Interlachen, Florida.  According to my Daddy’s cousin Robbie, it was built in 1966, by my great-grandfather, Alton Knox.  It was at this lake that I learned to swim and water-ski.

When my Grandpa was very ill in October 2019, many of us who loved him, spent some quality time together.  Some time after his funeral we made plans to meet together at the Lake House to have a family reunion.  On this past Tuesday, it had been one year since Grandpa left.  Although we didn’t discuss this at the reunion, it was fitting that we gathered together at a place that he loved.

So today LB and I took a drive.  I went, not only to represent my Daddy, but to see the people that I remembered were a part of my life when I was growing up.  I’ll try to name everyone in attendance to document the event: my Daddy’s sister Debbie, Daddy’s cousins Robbie and Rosie, and my cousin Melissa.  There were others who came along later after I was grown, Robbie’s son Robert and Robert’s wife and son, Robbie’s wife Sharon and her daughter, Rosie’s husband Eddie, their daughter Sasha and her friend Frank, Melissa’s daughter Brooke and Brooke’s boyfriend, and Melissa’s son Brandon’s girlfriend with their new baby.  If I left anyone out, I’m sorry, I have a terrible memory, which is one of the reasons I blog.

I had been looking forward to visiting this beloved location and

it was a lovely day.

Both the house and the lake were smaller than I remembered.

There are inside doors that were not previously there and the house seems darker than it used to be.  Debbie told us about a huge tree that had fallen on the front screened porch.

She had to have the tree removed and the roof replaced.

She also had a new dock built.  There is still a lot of work to do, but it is too much for Debbie to manage alone.  I’m not sure if she will try to keep it up or decide to sell.

We took a walk out onto the new dock.  The water appears to be black.

When I was growing up, Mema would purchase a load of sand every year and have us shovel most of it into the water, to make it more inviting.

In the late 80’s it looked like this…

As I walked out to the end of the dock this weekend, I remember thinking, how did I swim in this? Today I would have a hard time wading in the shallow.

On the way home, we drove a little further south to get gas.  I saw a sign that read “Orange Springs” and I recalled visiting that spring during many of our summer vacations.  The water was SO cold.  LB asked me what I was thinking.  He asked just about the time that we were passing the Artesian well on 315C.  People were always stopped there, by the side of the road, to collect water.  I remember stopping there as well.

I remember the summer that I spent a week at the lake with Mema Reid and my sister.  We stopped on the way and picked blueberries.  During that week at the lake we would have Frosted Flakes topped with blueberries for breakfast.  Other meals would involve Mema standing at the stove frying something.  Whether it was pork chops and eggs for breakfast or fresh caught bream for dinner, she was always crafting something good in that little kitchen.  As I sat at the same old dining table talking with Debbie and Rosie, I could still see her standing there working her magic, talking loudly and being larger than life.

But when I was a kid, most of the time was spent at the water.

In the Water

Who was that little girl who would swim out to the middle of this lake, climb up on a floating dock, and dive off of it to touch the bottom?

And at NIGHT?

Who in their right mind would skinny dip in this lake in the dark?

I was a tough little redneck, but as I told LB on Saturday, that little girl is long gone.

Free samples and Floor models

June 30, 2019

Everyone appreciates something free!  One of the perks of shopping at Costco is the free samples.

Occasionally LB and I will go to

Costco

and, by the time we leave, there is no reason to have dinner.

At least for me.

Since we are planning to cookout on July 4th, last Sunday LB decided we would go to Costco to pick up some of their sirloin burgers.  I agreed with his good idea, so off we went.

While LB was looking at some Levis, I noticed a lady handing out samples.

“I wonder what she’s giving away”, I said.

To which he replied, “let’s go find out”.

Although very odd in appearance, the chicken burger was okay.  Nevertheless, LB and I decided to purchase the sirloin burgers instead.

Then there was potato salad raspberry jalapeño dip with crackers salsa with tortilla chips a popsicle (aka a piece of a popsicle) Madeline’sNathan’s hotdogs and more.

After all of that, I was done.

But the shopping continued.

LB and I have been looking to purchase patio furniture.

We saw a very nice set floor model at Costco which was marked down $600 less than the online price.  I liked it.

He liked it.

But there was still some uncertainty.

After some discussion, by the time we arrived back home, the decision was made.  Later that day, LB called Costco. He learned that there were 3 sets available and he would be able to pick up a set that was still packaged the next day.  LB checked with Wayne to see if he would be available to help, and on Monday morning, LB and Wayne collected and delivered 3 large boxes to our backyard.

The Barcalounger 6 piece Theater Seating Set

It was quite an undertaking to unbox and setup the collection, but LB was a champ, and I helped a little.

We enjoyed the remainder of the evening relaxing in our new Barcalounger recliners!

A Week to Remember

June 3, 2019

Friday

May 24th at 4:30 PM could not come soon enough.

But it finally did and I was ON VACATION!

LB and I had planned to take a western Caribbean cruise beginning on May 30th, however my plan was to enter Vacation Mode as soon I left the office on the Friday before.

And so I did.

I came home that afternoon, made my customary Friday night little pizzas for LB and began my plan to

DO WHAT I WANT

for the next ten days.

Sunday

LB and I went shopping.  Because we had planned a BIG Memorial Day Celebration, we headed to the grocery store to pick up necessary party essentials and prepare for the coming day.

Monday

was a Memorial Day family gathering.

I was so happy to be able to spend time with my kids, my Mama, my sister, and the precious little ones that call me Glammy.

There are two of them and they are adorable.

One has a Glammy persona at times, and prefers to not be caught on camera doing “her thing” unless adequately planned.

Being that I could not help myself, despite her protests, I snapped Lydia’s picture as she conquered “Sunny the obnoxious swan” with the help of Aunt Manda.

Tuesday

I met Demetra at her salon on St. John’s Avenue to get her help bringing my grays under control.  While I was there Demetra told me about a cupcakery that is for sale.  Silvada’s is looking to franchise and sell the St. John’s Avenue location.

LB and I checked it out.

The Creme Brûlée cupcake was delicious and I believe it can be easily duplicated.

I would love nothing more than to bake cupcakes and feed people every day.

Later that evening, we enjoyed Disney’s new production of Aladdin on the big screen at EPIC Theatres. On

Wednesday

LB and I took part in St. Augustine’s weekly event

Music by the Sea

The last dinner in May was catered by Purple Olive.

LB and I shared a plate.

Since I don’t eat shrimp or blatant carbs, I enjoyed a plantain for dinner.

(not a word)

Thursday

was the big day.

Cruise day

to be continued…

Thank you for taking time out of your day to stop by my blog.

LB’s Birthday Weekend

January 27, 2019

LB’s birthday is on January 26th.
January 26th happened on a Saturday this year, so I was able to be home with him and start his special day with  a special BREAKFAST.
Pineapple Upside Down Pancakes were on the menu.  Courtesy of Mrs. Butterworth’s and a can of Dole Sliced Pineapple! He loved his pancakes!
And he loved opening Birthday Gifts! He looks SMASHING in his new jacket…
And is very excited about his new GOOGLE Home Mini! The Birthday Boy spent his day playing with ‘Hey Google’.
I assumed we would go out for dinner and live music later that evening, but he didn’t want to venture out in the cold.  He requested homemade pizza for dinner.
And he chose the German Chocolate Tres Leches Cake from a list of cakes that “you MUST TRY”.
It is delicious!

I’ve included the recipe courtesy of Taste of Home so we can make it again:

German Chocolate Tres Leches Cake

  • Servings: 16
  • Time: 60 mins
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

Ingredients

  • 1 package chocolate cake mix
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
  • 1-1/2 cups heavy whipping cream, divided
  • 1/4 cup rum
  • 3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/2 cup sweetened shredded coconut, toasted
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350°. Prepare and bake cake mix according to package directions, using a 13×9-in. baking pan. Cool on a wire rack.
  • Meanwhile, in a large bowl, whisk milks, 1/2 cup cream and rum. With a wooden skewer, poke holes in cake about 1/2 in. apart. Slowly pour milk mixture over cake, allowing mixture to absorb into cake. Let stand 30 minutes. Refrigerate, covered, 8 hours or overnight.
  • In a small bowl, beat remaining cream until it begins to thicken. Add confectioners’ sugar; beat until stiff peaks form. Spread over top of cake. Sprinkle with coconut and pecans.

The LB Birthday Weekend theme song was When I’m 64.

It was completely appropriate for the occasion.
