Forever Everly

August 23, 2021

Last night I was watching a movie on CMT when, between commercials, I saw a tribute to Don Everly.  He had passed away at age 84, and although I didn’t know him personally, it made me feel sad.  Don Everly is best known for his work with his younger brother, Phil, who died in 2014.  They were truly a couple of cuties! Together they were known as The Everly Brothers.  Immediately I shared this with my family, because it gave me a clear memory of my Daddy.  I’m not sure the younger ones would be able to follow that, but I shared it anyway.

The Everly Brothers

began as an American country duo and became Grand Ole Opry members in 1957.  They were inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 1986.  Known for “steel-string acoustic guitar playing and close harmony singing”, Phil and Don Everly were raised in a musical family.  They debuted on radio singing along with their father Ike Everly and mother Margaret Everly as “The Everly Family”.  They gained fame quickly when they became a duo in 1957.

I suppose that was about the time when my daddy first heard them sing, and they became a favorite.

Many years later he would introduce them to me.

It has been said that family members are able to harmonize together in a way that cannot be duplicated by those who are not related.  It is certainly true that the Everly Brothers had a way of complementing one another vocally that was nothing less than fascinating.  Considered one of pop music’s greatest vocal partnerships, Don and Phil Everly had worldwide hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s; hits like “All I Have to Do is Dream”, “Walk Right Back”, “Wake up Little Susie”, and “Cathy’s Clown”.

My sister and I tried to mimic their sound singing “Bye Bye Love” LOL.  Mine was the high part.  I’m not sure I could still remember how to sing my part with her, but I think it would be fun to try.

The Everly Brothers had many hits and I’ve included two examples of their hit songs.  I will ALWAYS love their music and I hope you will enjoy listening.

Happy Friday!

https://i0.wp.com/prettyis.me/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/pastelfireworksgiphy.gif?ssl=1

This is the first week of March 2021.  I can’t believe how time flies.  It has been one year since the start of the plandemic.  I’m hoping this month will bring good news and 2021 will begin looking better than 2020.

Hope Hope Hope

This week my favorites begin with sweet memories…

Favorite # ONE

Happy Birthday Daddy

He would have been 75 years old on March 1st.He was and is precious.

I didn’t publish a new blog post this year, but I’ve written several posts celebrating Daddy.  Last year I published this post.

If you haven’t read it yet, I think it is worth a read.

My nephew Clay was remembering some of the record albums and songs that Daddy enjoyed.  He started a chat with the family on Monday March 1st to share some memories.

Favorite # TWO

Family Chat

There were several more and I remember all of them.  Except Nancy and Lee.

As I was listening to some of my Daddy’s records and favorite songs, I thought I would share another version of one that I discovered.  After I was listening to Gentle On My Mind I noticed another version by The Band Perry

Favorite # THREE

~

It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t say something about food in my post today.  I mentioned my sushi bowl last week in this post.  This week I did one better…

Favorite # FOUR

Fajita Bowl

Peppers, onions, pintos and rice… low cal and yummy!

~

Favorite # FIVE

Dr. Seuss

This belonged to either Stephanie or Amanda.  It looks like Amanda started to write her name at the bottom,  Richard espcially loved one of the books in this collection:  Green Eggs and Ham.  He eventually learned to recite it as I read it to him.  I’m glad I held onto these books.  You never know when the other Dr. Seuss books may offend someone to the point that they eliminate them all.

The Soundtrack of My Life

July 25, 2020

The idea for this post came to me shortly after LB and I went to see Donnie and Marie Osmond in concert.  I LOVED that concert and wrote about the experience which you can read here.

At the close of the concert LB bought one of Donnie’s CDs which was titled

The Soundtrack of My Life.  Donnie chose songs that gave him happy memories of different times in his life.  Inside the jacket was a little snippet about each song included in the CD.

Music has always been a big part of my life and there are many songs that take me back and bring a smile.

This is the soundtrack of MY life:

1. Downtown

Donnie’s first song was “My Cherie Amour” [by Stevie Wonder] because it was the first album he ever purchased as an 11 year old.  My first song came out of the 60’s and was sung by Petula Clark.  Apparently this was the first song I learned and I would sing it aloud.  As a little girl I remember the album that Daddy would play and hearing this song many times.

I still like to sing along.

2. The Bare Necessities

I have ALWAYS been a fan of Disney movies.  As a little girl one of my favorites was The Jungle Book.  It was one of the many that I saw in the movie theater…probably the Edgewood Theater.  I had this vinyl record that included songs and dialogue from the movie and a bonus read along book.

I LOVED it!

3. Girl

It happened in 1971.  The Brady Bunch episode was called “Getting Davy Jones”.  I wouldn’t know it until reruns became a thing, but I wanted to be Marcia Brady and I had a crush on Davy Jones just like Marcia.

Marcia Marcia Marcia.

This performance is Davy Jones’ at his cutest!

4. I Write the Songs

I was in love with Barry Manilow… as much as a nine year old can be.  It was 1975 when I heard Barry Manilow sing this on television while I was at Mema and Papa Duck’s house.  It was probably my Aunt Debbie’s influence, she was the aunt closest to my age and I always liked what she liked.  I remember listening to her Barry Manilow album.  I Write the Songs was written by Beach Boys member Bruce Johnston. and has been rumored to be about Brian Wilson, but Johnson explained that he actually wrote it about ‘where music comes from’.  God is the “I” in I Write the Songs (source).

Why was I in love with Barry Manilow?  Lord have mercy.

My Mama always said he looks like a lizard.

5. Sixteen Candles

Sweet Sixteen in 1982.  That morning of my 16th birthday, I walked into the kitchen/family room to the sounds of this song.  My daddy thought it would be a nice way to start my day.  He was right, and I’ve never forgotten.

Later in 1984 Sixteen Candles starring Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall would become one of my favorites movies.

6. Happy Happy Birthday Baby

The birthday morning tradition would continue when I decided that every birthday should include a serenade.  I began playing “Happy Happy Birthday Baby” by the Tune Weavers for my kids on the morning of their birthday.  When LB introduced me to Ronnie Milsap’s version of the song, I was hooked.

7. Maneater

Don’t jump to conclusions.  I’m not claiming to be a Maneater.

My taste improved.  Bye Bye Barry.  Tall, slim, blonde, and handsome Daryl Hall sings the lead in this song that was released in 1982.  I love to listen to Hall & Oates’ music and could’ve included any of their songs in my list.  But I included this one because I remember my sister singing it when we were on the bus while on choir tour.  I recall that she was scolded for vocalizing such a worldly tune.  Its true that it isn’t the kind of song to be singing while touring with a church youth choir, but its still a catchy tune.

8. The Doxology

Changing course… Hard RIGHT turn… Every Sunday morning following the offertory special (the music played during the collection of the church’s tithes and offerings), the congregation would stand together and sing “The Doxology”.  There were times that I was irritated with this tradition.  Today I can say with all honesty that I would LOVE to be a part of that church again.

9. Footloose

The year was 1984 and Kevin Bacon was a rising star.  I loved him in my favorite soap opera The Guiding Light and in the movie Footloose.  The movie and song were both popular in 1984, the year I graduated from high school.

10. Something To Talk About

At various times in my life, I’ve made one mess or another and given people something to talk about.  Fortunately God’s grace and mercy are greater than any of my messes.

11. Saved

A special hymn that can be heard at any traditional Baptist church service, a favorite of my Daddy’s, also sung at his funeral.

This song was written in 1911 by J.P. (Jack) Scholfield after attending a revival meeting in Gonzales, Texas. Mordecai Ham was preaching on the subject, “Christ our Refuge.” In the congregation was a man that had killed 4 men.  The man listened to Ham explain that the Cities of Refuge in the Old Testament are a type of Christ, who is a refuge for sinners and offers eternal forgiveness for all who will flee to Him.  Sitting there in his seat, the sinner found Christ as his refuge.  He jumped up from his seat and shouted, “Saved! Saved! Saved!”

J.P. (“Jack”) was so inspired that he composed both the lyrics and music for this song (source).

I’ve found a Friend, who is all to me, His love is ever true;
I love to tell how He lifted me and what His grace can do for you.

Refrain

Saved by His power divine, saved to new life sublime!
Life now is sweet and my joy is complete, for I’m saved, saved, saved!

He saves me from every sin and harm, secures my soul each day;
I’m leaning strong on His mighty arm; I know He’ll guide me all the way. (Refrain)

When poor and needy and all alone, in love He said to me,
“Come unto Me and I’ll lead you home, to live with Me eternally.” (Refrain)

12. Thanks

My most recent addition, this is the song I like to hear before I go to bed on Sunday night.  It reminds me that I have every reason to be thankful.

What is the soundtrack of YOUR life?

It has been a BUSY week

and I’ve enjoyed most of it!

Here are the HIGHLIGHTS courtesy of my

Friday Favorites!

The Right Stuff

Thirty years later, this “boy band” has still got it!

New Kids On The Block may not be New (formed in 1984), but they are undoubtedly better than ever!

After their split in 1994, NKOTB reconnected in 2007 and have been going strong since!

On Friday night LB and I had the opportunity to see them in concert.

You can read all about that adventure HERE.

Saturday Afternoon

Spending the day with the birthday girl!

Before we launched Barbie and a new boat,

I learned all sorts of things from Lydia.

She explained that there are others meant to be a part of this particular boating adventure.  With Lydia looking on, I checked into this on my iPhone and found

this review.

Both Lydia and I were equally mesmerized.

Lydia was convinced that I could buy them all right from my phone.

Immediately.

Instead we decided to explore further.

We moved our investigation upstairs to watch on the big screen and found more!

Although it had escaped my attention, I learned that Barbie and her family are featured in a variety of programs to view on internet/television.

There is

Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures

and

Barbie Dreamtopia

and the pièce de résistance

Barbie meets Isla:

and so…

Favorite # THREE

is

Isla

The Transforming Mermaid

which I ordered on Amazon Prime Day. This surprise will be presented to Miss Lydia on a day when a surprise is deemed necessary.

Favorite # FOUR

Bread

The low carb kind.

This week, for the second time, I made a low carb, gluten free bread:

this recipe from Castle in the Mountains is very good!

Although it will never replace Sunbeam or Wonder Bread, it will satisfy a carb craving for the carb starved Paleo, Keto, and gluten free folks.

A Mid-Week Date Night Surprise to see a

Movie

The Lion King

remake of Disney’s 1994 animation has been a much anticipated film.

LB and I got to see it before opening night!

The Lion King

was awesome!

From the very first scene, I was captivated, much the same way I was when I saw the original.  The animals were amazing.  The hyenas were SCARY! Timon and Pumbaa were hilarious!  If I didn’t find myself tearing up, I had a smile on my face.

I highly recommend!

The Right Stuff

July 13, 2019

hangin tough new kids on the block GIF

New Kids On The Block

had it!

Thirty years later, this “boy band” has still got it!

New Kids On The Block may not be New (formed in 1984), but they are undoubtedly better than ever!  After a split in 1994, NKOTB reconnected in 2007 and have been going strong since!

On Friday night LB and I had the opportunity to see them in concert on their

Mixtape Tour

We trekked through the rain to the Arena, passed the wand test, headed to concessions for nachos, and then made our way to our seats.

When I stepped into the row toward my seat, someone was anxiously awaiting my arrival.  The young lady introduced herself as Shianna and gave me a hug.  I felt so welcomed!  Although this was not her first, she was so excited to be at the Mixtape concert!  I’m so glad she had experienced a NKOTB concert previously, because she did not make it through the entire show.

BUT WHAT

GREAT SEATS

LB & I HAD!

Because there were TWO stages, we basically had 4th row seats for half of the concert.

Illtown Sluggaz warmed up the early crowd with a preview of things to come during a sing/dance-a-long performing a fast-paced mix of hits from our 80s mixtapes.

NKOTB was the main attraction on their Mixtape Tour which included special guest musicians Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Salt-N-Pepa, and Naughty By Nature.

Unlike most concerts I’ve attended, the featured group opened the show and kept it hopping for the next 3 hours, taking turns with their guest performers, moving between stages   and popping up in the audience. They sang songs like “Hangin’ Tough,” “Block Party,” and “Cover Girl,” and “Single” which were full of energy.  Then they toned it down with some of my favorites :

“Please Don’t Go Girl” which was performed with emotion by Joey, and “I’ll be Loving You” by Jordan, both nostalgic and loved by all, receiving an extended ovation.

The concert ended with “80s Baby,” a collaboration performed by NKOTB and their guests:

It was an appropriate nod to the mixtape those of us living our teenage years in the 80s used to amass our favorite tunes.

Although I’m hoarse, I’m still singing as I write this! I would have to say it was the best concert ever!

PARTY TIME

August 6, 2018

This month The Blended Blog Asks about Party Time.

Favorite Birthday Party as a Child?

There is but one memorable childhood party, and I only recall bits and pieces.  I believe it was the year of my 12thbirthday, and it was near the end of the Disco era.  WHAT?

Some of the things I remember about that party are:

  • It was set up in the garage
  • Boys were invited
  • Disco Dynamite was one of the awesome records that were played.

The event must have turned out well, because the vague memory always brings a smile to my face.

Do you like to Entertain? Yes or No?

I like to have people over and feed them.

What kind of Parties are your favorite?

Dress up parties are amusing!

One year our family dressed as Batman characters to celebrate Richard’s birthday.  Dressing up for Laurie’s Halloween party every year is a lot of fun too.It is good to have a specific event to plan around, like the Super Bowl Party we had this past January. There will typically be something on the TV like a football game (obviously) or my YouTube party playlist to help provide musical entertainment.

If I host a party with family in mind, it will usually involve the pool.

Big or Small Parties?

Both.

Favorite thing to do at Parties?

Eat.

Party Food Favorites?

Finger foods are good!  Dips are great!  Anything that you can dip a cracker or chip into is usually a big hit!

Favorite Flavor Birthday Cake?

I like a cake with buttercream frosting and ‘Happy Birthday Kim’ decorations from a local grocery store bakery.Yes I’ll do it!

Balloons? Yes or No?

Yes, love balloons!  Especially when they come special delivery in a balloon bouquet!

Best Party Song?

Good Question!  There are so many!  Uptown Funk.  Love Shack.  Anything from the 80’s!

As I mentioned before, I have a YouTube Party Playlist.  Accessing the website on the TV delivers party music as well as video.  A fun song like The Cupid Shuffle will provide dance instruction as well!

Do you like to Dance? Yes or No?

Yes, I do like to dance.

No, I do not dance well.

Luckily my partner helps me look like I know what I’m doing.

From the time I left work last Friday afternoon until Sunday night, last weekend blew by so fast that I had no time to post!  No Friday Favorites! From cupcake creation on Friday night, to Lydia’s mermaid birthday party on Saturday, to celebration of another birthday out with friends Sunday night, I found myself in need of another day off to recuperate!  But alas, Monday came and the workweek ensued.

Now it is Finally Friday again and I WILL share my weekly favorites!

Corn Nuggets

This tasty treat was recently introduced by a co-worker whom I’ve begun referring to as Corn Nugget.  Maria thinks they are the greatest thing since sliced bread.  Today the Triple J’s Seafood Truck came to our parking lot to provide the company with all the fried food our hearts desired.  And apparently they supplied the company with all the fried food aboard, as they sold out.  Juenic purchased a container of Corn Nuggets and offered one to me.These are delish.

One is all I needed to let me know that I love them and DO NOT NEED any more!

Favorite # FOUR

Welcome!

I’m Kim… and I love Pretty clothes, Pretty décor, Pretty days, and Pretty much anything that involves family and fun.  Growing up, My Mama told me more than once “Pretty is as Pretty does” …encouraging me to focus on the inner pretty girl, as she is the one that matters most.

Here on my blog, I’m sharing what I see as pretty.  Whether it be an outfit, an experience, an event, a memory or thought.  Hopefully I’ll share something that will be interesting, useful, or make you smile along the way.
