Thirty-five Years of Ornaments

December 16, 2019

When I finally opened Facebook on Sunday, I found that I had missed a Facebook message from a sweet friend.  “Hope you are having a great weekend” she wrote.  Instead of replying like a normal person would:

“Thank you, I hope you are too!”

I explained what my weekend had consisted of and added a couple pictures of what I did on Saturday and Sunday.  When I started thinking about this I realized I had stayed too busy and should have been more sociable or spent some time outside with LB (it was a beautiful weekend).

Nevertheless, I did get a lot accomplished.

One such accomplishment included

Decorating a Christmas Tree

I have two Christmas trees this year.

One is purple and decorated with a matching collection of red, white, and green glass balls.  It is Elvis’ favorite.

The second one is in the front room.  It is in this unnamed room that I have a traditional (not purple) Christmas tree which is adorned with the ornaments I’ve collected over the past 30+ years.

I have a little bit of everything.

LB agrees.  He expressed his thoughts with the comment “that’s quite a mixed bag you’ve got there”.

I thought it would be a good idea to capture a few photos of these special ornaments to add to my collection of memories here in this little blog.

My collection includes the original treasures created years ago by Stephanie, Amanda, and Richard:

I’ve always loved Richard’s muddy snowman

There are ornaments from my first-born baby’s first Christmas

A couple of cutie pie ornaments

A turkey ornament that was presented to me with the note…

To Ma From a Turkey.

These ornaments from Mema and Grandpa Reid.  A closer look reveals Mema’s handwriting.

I have this gifted ornament that ‘reminded someone of me’

And a few from that period of time when I obsessed with Victorian.

This beautiful star ornament is from Mama to remember our first Christmas without Daddy

And this little tiny Lydia handprint.

Truly a diverse assortment, each representing a special time.  And each a reminder of how quickly time flies!

~

The tree is finally decorated!

It may not be Pinterest worthy, but I like it.

And although I didn’t visit much with friends or family this past weekend, spent a lot of time thinking about them.

Friday Favorites

December 6, 2019

This has been a short work week for me.  Monday was the last day of my Thanksgiving holiday vacation.

On Thanksgiving Day, LB and I headed to Asheville, NC.

It was an easy trip, barely any traffic, and we enjoyed a relaxing evening at the Hampton Inn & Suites Asheville Biltmore Village.

Although the hotel and room falls into the category of favorite overnight stays, my Friday favorites today begin with last Friday

Favorite # ONE

Shopping

on Black Friday.

There’s a first time for everything and for me it was Black Friday shopping and a visit to the Asheville Outlets.

First stop

Le Creuset®

where I picked out a Christmas present.

And the

Lindt Chocolate Shop next door

where LB enjoyed some free samples.

Next Kirkland’s where we found many cute accessories…

and this cow(which appeals to me for some reason).

And Banana Republic where I found

Favorite # TWO

This Jacket

which I had to haveThank you LB!

And later that evening

Favorite # THREE

A Candlelight Tour

of the Biltmore House

which was the reason for our visit to Asheville.

It was beautiful inside and out

The Christmas lights and decorations were so pretty and I came home with thoughts of getting my house decorated for Christmas.

Favorite # FOUR

In addition to decorating in preparation for holiday festivities, I’ve started making goodies.

Beginning with these

Peanut Butter Pinwheel Candies

In 2017 when I attempted to make these, there was an epic fail.

If I had read those instructions at the time, there wouldn’t have been an epic fail

This year I used the recipe from Big Red Kitchen which included refrigerating BEFORE adding peanut butter and rolling.  I especially appreciated that tip “chill for 15 minutes to help it set a bit”.

The recipe calls for 3 ½-4 cups confectioners’ sugar, 6 T butter, 7 t milk, and Peanut butter (no specific amount).  Although I could’ve added more peanut butter, the candies turned out well Since we have begun to deck the halls, we’ve used a seasonal channel on the TV to help set the mood

Favorite # FIVE

Together with Christmas hymns… or Michael Bublé (whatever you like).

It has been a busy week!

Richard, Emily, and the baby girls came to Jacksonville Saturday to spend the weekend and share in our annual Sunday before Thanksgiving Dinner.

A Saturday night slumber party commenced.  Lydia and Rory slept in Glammy’s room.  And they managed to get [maybe] six hours of sleep.  They were being OH So quiet Sunday morning; I thought they were getting some much needed sleep.

But when I sat up in bed I saw two little sets of bright eyes, wide awake and ready to PLAY

Favorite # ONE

Lively Little Girls

I assumed I would wake up and tiptoe out of the bedroom leaving them to have sweet dreams, but they were quick to jump up.  As I made my stop into the kitchen to make coffee they headed to the “Barbie room”.  It wasn’t long before they quickly returned to ask “Glammy won’t you come play Barbies?”

Well YES!

And we played various things throughout the day.  There was one “game” I particularly enjoyed

Favorite # TWO

Playing Sous-Chef

This little one assisted several times in the kitchen, she aided in egg cracking for breakfast, she [nearly] single-handedly prepared a corn casserole, and arranged the appetizer platter.

And because pumpkin pie and pecan bars were not acceptable choices for dessert that evening, she made chocolate pudding.

When all was finished she asked “what can we do next?”

We can do dinner!

Sunday before Thanksgiving Dinner

I love the almost traditional Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and all the sides.

And nobody can carve a turkey like LB!

Favorite # FOUR

Leftovers on Monday

it was back to work as usual – I took leftovers for lunch

and LB enjoyed leftovers for dinner.I didn’t take a picture of my lunch as it was much less impressive.

Tuesday

was typical with the exception of an impromptu taco dinner party with Stephanie and Amanda.

Wednesday

was an exceptional day which included very light traffic, very light work, and a visit to the theater later that evening to see

Thank You for Your Service

November 11, 2019

Veterans Day

is observed annually on November 11.

It is a day set aside to honor our military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who died while in service, Veterans Day honors all military veterans, including those still with us.  Veterans Day encourages us to value our veterans for their service and sacrifice.  It is a reminder to all of us to stop and reflect on the value of peace in our country and in our lives.

I can’t help but think about my Grandpa today.  As I’ve mentioned quite a few times in earlier posts, my Grandpa was in the Army and served in WWII.

Grandpa didn’t lose his life while in service, but he returned home and enjoyed a long life that allowed him to raise children and later develop relationships with grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

It hasn’t been a month since he left us to be with Jesus.  At his funeral service there was an American flag draped over his casket, as is customary for a deceased veteran who has served honorably in the military.

It was at his service that I first experienced the

Folding of the American flag

I can’t explain why, but it touched my heart

Typically, the American flag is given to the next-of-kin, as a keepsake after its use during a funeral service.  And in this case, it was presented to Grandpa’s only surviving child, my Aunt Debbie.

~

After attending the service and later seeing the photos LB took, I was compelled to do a little research on the flag folding.

“Traditional flag etiquette recommends that before an American flag is stored or presented, its handlers should twice fold it in half lengthwise; then (from the end opposite the blue field) make a triangular fold, continuing to fold it in triangles until the other end is reached. This makes a triangular “pillow” of the flag with only the blue starred field showing on the outside, and it takes thirteen folds to produce: two lengthwise folds and eleven triangular ones.” (source)

Fold-us-flag-animated.gif

I thought there may be meaning behind the way the flag is folded.  While there is no official flag-folding ceremony script (offering the meaning to each of the folds), there are scripts which could be used.

As an example, one ceremony script includes this:

“The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks who gave a portion of [his] life for the defense of our country to attain a peace throughout the world.” (source)

Very appropriate for today as an homage to all Veterans who have given “a portion of life for the defense of our country to attain a peace throughout the world”.

Thank you.

I didn’t have to work today!  Talk about a HAPPY FRIDAY!

It’s the first week of July and a significant time in America as we celebrate our nation’s independence!

Stuart became part of our family in 1988 when he married my sister.  Chynna joined the family when she married my nephew Clay.  Emily became my daughter-in-law when she married Richard in 2013.  And the newest member of our family is Adrian who was born in 2018.

There was a time when I was the only person in my family to celebrate a birthday in June.

Now there are FIVE of us!

A Week to Remember

June 3, 2019

Friday

May 24th at 4:30 PM could not come soon enough.

But it finally did and I was ON VACATION!

LB and I had planned to take a western Caribbean cruise beginning on May 30th, however my plan was to enter Vacation Mode as soon I left the office on the Friday before.

And so I did.

I came home that afternoon, made my customary Friday night little pizzas for LB and began my plan to

DO WHAT I WANT

for the next ten days.

Sunday

LB and I went shopping.  Because we had planned a BIG Memorial Day Celebration, we headed to the grocery store to pick up necessary party essentials and prepare for the coming day.

Monday

was a Memorial Day family gathering.

I was so happy to be able to spend time with my kids, my Mama, my sister, and the precious little ones that call me Glammy.

There are two of them and they are adorable.

One has a Glammy persona at times, and prefers to not be caught on camera doing “her thing” unless adequately planned.

Being that I could not help myself, despite her protests, I snapped Lydia’s picture as she conquered “Sunny the obnoxious swan” with the help of Aunt Manda.

Tuesday

I met Demetra at her salon on St. John’s Avenue to get her help bringing my grays under control.  While I was there Demetra told me about a cupcakery that is for sale.  Silvada’s is looking to franchise and sell the St. John’s Avenue location.

LB and I checked it out.

The Creme Brûlée cupcake was delicious and I believe it can be easily duplicated.

I would love nothing more than to bake cupcakes and feed people every day.

Later that evening, we enjoyed Disney’s new production of Aladdin on the big screen at EPIC Theatres. On

Wednesday

LB and I took part in St. Augustine’s weekly event

Music by the Sea

The last dinner in May was catered by Purple Olive.

LB and I shared a plate.

Since I don’t eat shrimp or blatant carbs, I enjoyed a plantain for dinner.

(not a word)

Thursday

was the big day.

Cruise day

to be continued…

A Long Weekend

Now if I had my way, every weekend would include Friday and Monday.  The work week would consist of Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  We need to get our priorities straight!

However, since it is what it is, I am thankful, on this weekend, to have an extra day away from the office to relax.

And it is important to remember the reason for the day…

Amen!

OH HEY VACAY!

I’ve been saying it all day and getting on the nerves of my coworkers.

Speaking of fun tees

An early Birthday Surprise!

Although I didn’t realize it at the time, Wendy and Kathy were chomping at the bit to get me away from my desk this morning.  When I returned they were both sitting there attentively, anticipating my reaction to the cards and presents that decorated my desk.  I would love to have been able to capture the moment with a photo because they were so cute.

Since I won’t be there on my birthday, they surprised me with a birthday presents: a beautiful bracelet and cute coffee cup.

Preparing for a Pool Party

we’ve done it before, but this year it is going to be even bigger!

Last year it was just me, LB, and Mama.

I wrote about that adventure here.

This year we are planning to have approximately 17 adults and 7 babies join up.  We’ll be enjoying cheeseburger sliders and hotdogs/sausage dogs.  I’m looking forward to the chaos.

Welcome!

I’m Kim… and I love Pretty clothes, Pretty décor, Pretty days, and Pretty much anything that involves family and fun.  Growing up, My Mama told me more than once “Pretty is as Pretty does” …encouraging me to focus on the inner pretty girl, as she is the one that matters most.

Here on my blog, I’m sharing what I see as pretty.  Whether it be an outfit, an experience, an event, a memory or thought.  Hopefully I’ll share something that will be interesting, useful, or make you smile along the way.
