Friday Favorites

November 6, 2020

This past week’s forecast included Halloween, a hurricane, a time change, and an election.  Despite the election, I have Friday Favorites and I have to say…

I’m so grateful for Friday!

This week also included the birthday of my firstborn

Favorite # ONE

Stephanie

I’ve published posts about Stephanie which you can read here and in a story here.

Stephanie likes to challenge me to create interesting birthday cakes like I mentioned in this post.  For her birthday this year she asked for a Halloween murder cake.  I did the best I could to recreate the photo she sent to me…She has a unique sense of taste.

To celebrate Stephanie’s birthday, many of our family gathered together on Sunday night.

One of the appetizers that I served at the party was a hit and a new favorite…

The GOP

The Grand Old Party (GOP) is also known as the Republican Party and is one of the two major political parties in the United States of America.  During the 19th century the Republican Party stood against the extension of slavery into our country’s new territories and, ultimately, for slavery’s complete abolition.  In the 21st-century, the Republican Party supports lower taxes, free market capitalism, restrictions on immigration, increased military spending, and the right to keep and bear arms.

Tuesday was election day and it began as a good day, but while we were sleeping something happened.  I know this because I was checking my FOX NEWS app between 3AM and 4AM.

I’m not one to make waves nor do I want to debate politics.  I love all things American including its history, the constitution, democracy, the right to vote, and the TRUTH.  I hope the truth is revealed.  And I hope God will continue to bless our country.

The Lake House Family Reunion

October 19, 2020

Have I told y’all about “The Lake” before?

Growing up I spent a lot of time at the lake house my grandparents owned.

The house is located on property at Lake Hewitt in Interlachen, Florida.  According to my Daddy’s cousin Robbie, it was built in 1966, by my great-grandfather, Alton Knox.  It was at this lake that I learned to swim and water-ski.

When my Grandpa was very ill in October 2019, many of us who loved him, spent some quality time together.  Some time after his funeral we made plans to meet together at the Lake House to have a family reunion.  On this past Tuesday, it had been one year since Grandpa left.  Although we didn’t discuss this at the reunion, it was fitting that we gathered together at a place that he loved.

So today LB and I took a drive.  I went, not only to represent my Daddy, but to see the people that I remembered were a part of my life when I was growing up.  I’ll try to name everyone in attendance to document the event: my Daddy’s sister Debbie, Daddy’s cousins Robbie and Rosie, and my cousin Melissa.  There were others who came along later after I was grown, Robbie’s son Robert and Robert’s wife and son, Robbie’s wife Sharon and her daughter, Rosie’s husband Eddie, their daughter Sasha and her friend Frank, Melissa’s daughter Brooke and Brooke’s boyfriend, and Melissa’s son Brandon’s girlfriend with their new baby.  If I left anyone out, I’m sorry, I have a terrible memory, which is one of the reasons I blog.

I had been looking forward to visiting this beloved location and

it was a lovely day.

Both the house and the lake were smaller than I remembered.

There are inside doors that were not previously there and the house seems darker than it used to be.  Debbie told us about a huge tree that had fallen on the front screened porch.

She had to have the tree removed and the roof replaced.

She also had a new dock built.  There is still a lot of work to do, but it is too much for Debbie to manage alone.  I’m not sure if she will try to keep it up or decide to sell.

We took a walk out onto the new dock.  The water appears to be black.

When I was growing up, Mema would purchase a load of sand every year and have us shovel most of it into the water, to make it more inviting.

In the late 80’s it looked like this…

As I walked out to the end of the dock this weekend, I remember thinking, how did I swim in this? Today I would have a hard time wading in the shallow.

On the way home, we drove a little further south to get gas.  I saw a sign that read “Orange Springs” and I recalled visiting that spring during many of our summer vacations.  The water was SO cold.  LB asked me what I was thinking.  He asked just about the time that we were passing the Artesian well on 315C.  People were always stopped there, by the side of the road, to collect water.  I remember stopping there as well.

I remember the summer that I spent a week at the lake with Mema Reid and my sister.  We stopped on the way and picked blueberries.  During that week at the lake we would have Frosted Flakes topped with blueberries for breakfast.  Other meals would involve Mema standing at the stove frying something.  Whether it was pork chops and eggs for breakfast or fresh caught bream for dinner, she was always crafting something good in that little kitchen.  As I sat at the same old dining table talking with Debbie and Rosie, I could still see her standing there working her magic, talking loudly and being larger than life.

But when I was a kid, most of the time was spent at the water.

In the Water

Who was that little girl who would swim out to the middle of this lake, climb up on a floating dock, and dive off of it to touch the bottom?

And at NIGHT?

Who in their right mind would skinny dip in this lake in the dark?

I was a tough little redneck, but as I told LB on Saturday, that little girl is long gone.

HAPPY FRIDAY!

I’m so glad we finally got here.

The week started out right because Monday was a holiday and the workweek didn’t begin until Tuesday.  This is always a good thing.  Because, you know what they say about Monday… can’t trust that day.  And with that, my first favorite is obviously

Monday

Favorite # ONE

On Monday I slept late, and pretty much did nothing all day.  On Monday afternoon, LB and I went to Salsas for a Mexican dinner fix.

On Tuesday, I went back to work. SAME OLD SAME OLD for me.

But for Lydia, there was a milestone.  She started school.

There are other items that have not yet arrived, but these are my favorites.

Also I’ve learned that straight, boot cut and flare jeans (as opposed to skinny) are the jeans on trend in 2020, so I needed to begin my search for something new (since my old ones don’t fit anymore).  Recently I have been watching a new fashion stylist on YouTube who provided this information.

That stylist is my

with her “Boujee On A Budget” series, this blogger does exactly what I would do if I had time.  She reveals the spring/fall runway fashions and trends with examples of lower cost styles.  I’ve enjoyed watching her videos.  I’m pretty sure you will enjoy watching too.

There’s No One Like A Sister

August 17, 2020

There IS NO ONE like a Sister

and that is why when my baby sister reached the age of 50, I traveled nearly 3 hours to be with her on her birthday.

I believe it was Clay’s idea.  He texted me one evening to tell me about the plan to surprise her while she was away on her Disney birthday adventure and asked if LB and I would be able to get away to join in the fun.

My response was “We can make it happen”.

My first thought was that we would leave work early on Monday, August 17th, then make our way to Orlando’s Disney Springs where we would meet up with family, and surprise Gina.  That was a pretty good plan, but LB had other plans.  He decided we should head to Orlando on Sunday, spend the night, and enjoy Monday away from work/home.

So we did.

We went to Universal CityWalk on Sunday and spent the day sight-seeing, but making sure to follow all the rules. Then later had dinner at Antojitos. Before making our way to the Residence Inn, we made a stop at Target… just because I like to

SHOP~

On Monday LB and I took our time getting ready, but eventually we were out door and headed to Disney Springs.  For the next 5 hours we would…

SHOP SHOPSHOP

You cannot tell by my expression, but I was having a good time.

To wrap up the Orlando event, we followed my sister and her crew to Sprinkles.

We walked up behind her and SURPRISE!

And she was surprised!  It brought tears to her eyes.We each ordered cupcakes at Sprinkles and found a place to sit and have a little visit.  It was a nice time together with family. We ate cupcakes and Gina opened her birthday gifts…I’m very lucky to have Gina in my life. There is no one else like her!

There’s no one like a sister…

’cause she’s known you all along. She gets your jokes, shares your folks, and likes the same old songs. There’s no one like a sister…

’cause she’s there no matter what –To talk, check in, see how you’ve been, and sometimes save your butt. There’s no one like a sister…

she’s a friend your whole life through. And none could be as good to me or loved as much as you!

Friday Favorites

July 24, 2020

It has been 3 weeks since I published a blog post!  I have drafts that I’ve started and not found the motivation to finish.  Even my Friday Favorites, which is a fairly easy post, has been missing.

I wonder if it is because every day feels like the same day?

Occasionally it is a bit depressing.  There are moments when I know that ‘I’ve got this’ but  sometimes it gets me down.  Typically on Mondays.

But today is Friday and I don’t have to work for TWO days so I’m going to celebrate!  Starting with

This Little Book

June 12, 2020

Right now there seems to be no way to watch television without being faced with some sort of doom and gloom.  To get a really good dose, listen to talk radio.

I am so ready for peace and for things to be happy in the world again.

During our extended stay at home, I’ve have been cleaning [a lot] and going through cabinets, closets, and drawers.  During one of these cleaning sessions I came across a little book…

The Mother’s Topical Bible.

Yesterday, in an effort to manage my thoughts, I picked up that little book.

Inside are specific bible verses, for specific needs.

When you need to forgive…

When you need personal comfort…

When you need inner peace.

I was looking for something that would speak to my current state of mind, and any of these would have been good.

But one topic caught my eye:

When You Think People Are Weird

Being that I do, I turned to page 317 and began to read 1 Corinthians 4:5…

“Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God” (KJV).

As I continued reading, the topic title caught my eye once again.  I had misread.  The topic was actually

When PEOPLE Think YOU Are Weird.

Well… that works too.

This is The Mother’s Topical Bible

This is a special little book that was given to me by Mama and Daddy…. “signed” by both.

I’m glad that it is back in my hands.
