It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

November 27, 2023

Just three days after Thanksgiving, LB and I started our annual Christmas festivities.  This year the festivities began with date night at the Alhambra for dinner and the show

Miracle on 34th Street

As usual an evening at the Alhambra always begins with soup and salad.  LB has the soup and I have the salad.  Then for the entree I will typically have salmon and he will have the traditional holiday feast.

The stage was beautiful and the performance was great

LB says he has never seen the movie Miracle on 34th Street, but I just can’t imagine having never seen such a classic.  I will make a point to have him watch both versions with me this Christmas season.

While the movie isn’t a musical, you can’t have an Alhambra production without music.  One of the songs that was incorporated into the production was

Pine Cones and Holly Berries

and it carried me right back to childhood.

LB had never heard the song.

He was amazed that I was singing along…

Pine cones and Holly Berries
Popcorn for you, apples for me
Red strip-ed candy, nut cracker handy
Kettle a-bubbling hot as can be.
snow clouds hang low and threatening
Maybe in won’t, praying it may
the brightest fireplace glows in every face
Waiting for Christmas day.

There’ll be walk-a-round songs and
talk-a-round songs
Songs of the inn and stable.
There’ll be morning time songs and
evening time songs
And grace at every table.
And Jingle bells will jingle all the way all day.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Everywhere you go;
There’s a tree in the Grand Hotel,
One in the park as well
The sturdy kind that doesn’t mind the snow.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
soon the bells will start
And the thing that will make them ring
is the carol that you sing
Right within your heart.

I knew this song as a little girl from Mama and Daddy’s 1965 record

This morning I found it on YouTube and listened to the whole thing.  LB and I plan to visit a vintage record shop soon and this will be one that we’re looking for.

Thank You Ma’am

June 3, 2020

Didn’t your Mama teach you to say “yes, ma’am” and “no, ma’am”?

We were at the Treasure Island Resort on the morning of my birthday.  Hoping for eggs Benedict (my favorite), LB and I made our way to the BRGR restaurant.

(this is the view from our suite)

Walking in, we saw a sign that read:

“Please seat yourself”

LB and I thought that, under the [COVID19] circumstances, we should sit outside.

There was only one other couple in the entire restaurant, and they were also outside.  We looked for a small table, but there was only one, and it was right next to the other couple, and did not seem to be an adequate 6 feet away.

So we chose a larger table… a table for six.

A female server emerged and asked if we were expecting others to join us.  I answered, “no, it is just the two of us”.  With no words, she waved her arm and motioned for us to move, as she pointed to the smaller table and declared that the tables we had chosen were meant for a larger group.

Bewildered, LB and I followed as she put us right next to the other couple.  This interaction was the first clue that we were to be waited on by someone who is completely lacking in ‘social skills’.  Neither one of us liked the way this was handled, but being that I do not deal well with conflict, and it was my birthday… no argument was given.

She brought our coffee and she took our order.

LB ordered the frittata sandwich.  He mispronounced the word frittata, she abruptly corrected him, but brought him his order. Eggs Benedict was not on the menu, but my breakfast was excellent!  Kudos to the chef!

I had a bacon, cheddar, onion, and spinach omelette…

that came with a loaf of bread.

As our server patrolled through the outdoor dining area [checking on ALL TWO of her tables], she would occasionally stop to ask if anything was needed.  If she provided LB with a coffee refill, or anything, he would respond as any southern gentleman does, with a friendly “Thank you ma’am”.  Each time she replied. When she replied, she would do so quietly, and beneath a mask.  I wasn’t sure, but it sounded like she said the word ‘BRANDY’.

It wasn’t until LB got the check that we saw that the server’s name was BRANDI and he realized she had indeed been correcting him when he would say, “thank you, ma’am”.

I had picked up on this a little earlier, but said nothing because

I wasn’t sure that I was really hearing what I was hearing.

Brandi brought our requested take out boxes and we filled them with half of our breakfast and left the BRGR restaurant that morning.  Brandi was rewarded with a good tip, but in my opinion should have been rewarded with a “can I speak with your manager?”

When LB and I discussed this as we left the restaurant, he was [for lack of a better expression] BLOWN AWAY that he had apparently offended this young woman.

LB and I later discussed my thoughts on being called “ma’am”.  I told him that although I’ve never confronted anyone, it does make me feel old.  Albeit, I understand the use of yes ma’am, no ma’am, thank you ma’am.

If you want to thank me, and you say,

“thank you ma’am”

I’m okay with that.

LB had no idea that this was ‘a thing’ until he googled “Thank you ma’am offends”.

In the article he shared, the writer, Kelly Kazik concludes, maybe we should not be offended by this (manners are a good thing after-all).

Although the Treasure Island Resort was beyond impressive, unfortunately, the resort’s only restaurant left us feeling a little disconcerted.

We wouldn’t go back to the BRGR restaurant during our 2020 stay at the Treasure Island Resort, but we did enjoy the other half of our breakfast, in our suite, the following day.

I Love It When We’re Cruisin’ Together

June 4, 2019

Included in the Travel list on my Bucket List Blog Post is

Go on a Caribbean cruise

Last week LB and I did just that!

We headed for Tampa on Thursday and sailed out of Port Tampa Bay later that afternoon.

Bon Voyage!

After an assessment of our room, and a moment to enjoy our private balcony, LB and I began to plan which events we most wanted to attend.

Carnival makes it easy to keep up with cruise activities by using the Carnival HUB app.  Some of our favorites were trivia,  live music, and productions such as the “Welcome Aboard Show” performed by the ship’s exceptional dancers who had some degree of vocal talent.

We decided not to dress up but keep it casual and enjoy dinner at the Italian buffet on the Lido deck. Prime Rib, Eggplant Parmesan, and baked fish

Low Carb

👍🏻

~

Friday was a day of indulging as I began my first full cruise day with a cup of very good coffee and an excellent eggs Benedict breakfast.  It was also very relaxing as we basked in the sun on the top deck And later enjoyed music trivia and the sing-a-longs that ensued.

Having spent my teens in the eighties makes me quite a contender for 80’s music trivia

but it doesn’t make me a good singer.Yes, that pencil is my microphone.

On Friday night LB and I dressed up and took advantage of the photo opportunities in the atrium and on the promenade deck.It is fun to doll up and be fancy.

Dinner was excellent every night

but dessert was the best.  If you’ve never tasted a Chocolate Melting Cake you should take a Carnival Cruise just to try one.

~

Saturday was excursion day.

Our ship docked at the port in Cozumel and we set out to explore.

LB and I spent time at Dolphin Discovery. We enjoyed time on Chankanaab Beach

and visiting with the locals

LB planned a day of fun and adventure with opportunities to cross items off of my bucket list.  Posing with a mariachi band was not one of those items, but it was fun nonetheless.

Saturday was also my birthday.  More about the Birthday Adventure here.

After dinner Saturday evening, LB and I went to a showing of the movie Bohemian Rhapsody which premiered in 2018 and apparently won Academy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.  The story was sad, but the music was good.

It was a relaxing way to end an exciting day!

~

Because I left home without packing sunscreen, by Sunday I was pink.  LB was too.  Henceforth, we remained in the shade to avoid further exposure to the sun

While indoors, LB thought it would be a good idea to experience one of the hamburgers from Guy Fieri’s grill aka Guy’s Burger Joint

Cruises are notorious for causing weight gain.  Believe it or not, LB managed to evade added poundage

but Kim did not.  [She didn’t do well against the Dealer either]

Valentine’s Day

February 14, 2019

Do you remember this scene from the movie You’ve Got Mail…Kathleen Kelly: I love daisies.

Joe Fox: You told me.

Kathleen Kelly: They’re so friendly. Don’t you think daisies are the friendliest flower?

~

When I laid eyes on my Valentine’s Day flowers, my first thought was “daisies are the friendliest flower”.

Thank you LB!

There was an attached card which read…

“You have bewitched me body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. And wish from this day forth never to be parted from you.  Your LB”.

~

If you are a fan of classics and romantic movies, you recognize that line from Pride and Prejudice.

As I’ve mentioned before, I will watch this 2005 version of that movie just to enjoy that single scene and the lines delivered by Matthew Macfadyen.

Included with the flower arrangement was a “Happy Valentine’s Day” balloon.

Sadly, I lost my balloon.

Apparently it wasn’t tied down well (or at all) in the flower arrangement.  When I leaned into my car to place my arrangement on the floor, the balloon tapped the car door and was floating away before I knew what had happened.  It was a sad moment and I pouted all the way home.

~

LB and I will enjoy dinner and a show at the Alhambra a few times during the year.

Last February we saw Little Shop of Horrors which was, strangely enough, the featured Valentines Day show.  You can read that post here.

This year for Valentine’s Day the Alhambra featured an Elvis impersonator in a sold out show titled Elvis Aloha.

“Elvis” did a great job

The Chef

did an excellent job!

The Tuna Poke Salad was good, the Kahlua Pork was good, the Peanut Butter & Banana Pie was SO good.

The treadmill would be beckoning after this meal.

Thank you for taking time out of your day to stop by my blog.

Friday Favorites

December 28, 2018

Last Friday was my Favorite of all Fridays because I enjoyed the start of a staycation that lasted until Wednesday, December 26th.

Now I am back to work.

Alas.

But what a great Christmas holiday! And although being away from the office for 5 days was the best gift ever, I have some other favorites that I want to share today.

Favorite # ONE

While LB and I were Christmas stocking shopping last Saturday I was reminded of the bucket list that I have been adding to [and have yet to share].  One of the bucket list items is to try each flavor of

Pringles

This idea came to me when I was looking for items to add to my bucket list via google search.  I read in another blog that there are 29 flavors, but I count 22 on the Pringles website.

There were about 12 different varieties on the store’s shelf and I proceeded to add one of each to the buggy.  We walked around the store for about a half an hour before I decided that it was a bad idea to take so many Pringles home with me at one time.  So I put them all back.

We’ll tackle that bucket list item slowly.

Favorite # TWO

Sunday night LB and I experienced

Elf the Musical

at Alhambra Theater and Dining

Dinner was great.  I ordered the parmesan crusted salmon (which was SOOO good) and LB had the Holiday feast.  While Elf the Musical doesn’t compare to the Charles Dickens story, it was a very good show!

And as always, LB and I had a great time.

Favorite # THREE

In addition to the spectacular giraffe jammies presented to me by Stephanie, I also received a pair of ENORMOUS silver hoop earrings.  Richard thought it would be a good idea to try them on and LB caught it on camera.

This Photo

is definitely a favorite!

Favorite # FOUR

Friday’s

OOTD

Straight from Macclenny’s  Classy Crossroads Boutique

I wore this Merry Christmas outfit to work on Friday, so my blouse wasn’t off the shoulder as intended.  It can be worn comfortably both ways.  I love it and the jeans are very comfortable.

Blouse // Jeans // Shoes

Favorite # FIVE

 Holiday Hoopla

at Mama’s house!

I love it all!

Island Hopping

August 19, 2018

Saturday was National Fajita Day and the plan was to have Mama and my kids over for fajitas.  Schedules could not be coordinated to make this happen so LB decided it was time to take a trip.  Saturday afternoon we set out for a destination favorite…

St. Simon’s Island

After checking into the Hampton Inn it was time to find a Mexican Restaurant.

After all, a celebration was in order…

for National Fajita Day!

La Plancha

was the place!

And the fajitas were anything but typical.

The Spanish to English translation of  la plancha means ‘the iron’.  The adjective (in Spanish cookery) means grilled on a metal plate (source).

Dinner was not bad, but Not Served on a Seasoned Cast Iron Pan, and slightly lacking in flavor.

And where was the guacamole?Hopefully that review wasn’t too rough.  On a positive note, the decor is lovely.

Next stop

Ziggy Mahoney’s

Once upon a time, Ziggy’s was a nightclub that an older man hosted as a means to snuggle up to college girls and take selfies.  These days it has become a hot spot for seniors displaying dazzling dance moves. And suddenly I’m feeling a little more comfortable.Imagine that!

Before heading back to Jacksonville the next morning, I thought it would be a good idea to shop for a birthday gift for my sister.

The shops at St. Simon’s Island were closed which was a good thing as White House Black Market is more temptation than I am able to withstand.

Jekyll Island

proved to be the place to shop for a birthday gift.Tonya’s is the name of the boutique where I lingered.  I was able to find a sweet little gift for my sister

and

something that I wouldn’t mind having myself.

A purple (eggplant) Hobo handbag Yes, LB… this would make a lovely Christmas gift!

Thank you for taking time out of your day to stop by my blog.

Aclamaciones!

July 24, 2018

Aclamaciones is Spanish for

CHEERS!

It’s always nice to learn something new.

Aclamaciones to a controversial day in the bible belt, for it is

National Tequila Day!

drunk fun GIF by Mauro Gatti I’m pretty sure these are happy beers as opposed to happy shots of tequila, but you get the idea!

Instead of celebrating National Tequila Day, LB and I decided to celebrate Taco Tuesday with dinner at

El Potro Mexican Restaurant

I am not even telling the truth.  We did go to El Potro, but not to celebrate Taco Tuesday.

Fajitas were on the menu and LB ate his like a taco.

Maybe that isn’t too far from the truth.  Wikipedia describes Taco Tuesday as  “a custom in many US cities of going out to eat tacos or in some cases select Mexican dishes typically served in a tortilla on Tuesday nights.  Restaurants will often offer special prices, for example, “$1 fish tacos every Tuesday night”.  It is popular in many big cities across the nation and especially popular in the beach cities of Southern California.  Legally, “Taco Tuesday” is a trademark of Taco John’s and other restaurants are prohibited from using that term.” (source).

Now you know.

It isn’t often that we go out to dinner during on a week night, but the day has been overwhelming and some mental repose and unwinding was necessary.  Also the fajitas were delish!

I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Thank you for taking time out of your day to stop by my blog.
